What Is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a time-honored system of natural medicine developed over 200 years ago by German physician Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. Today, it is the second most widely used system of medicine in the world and is recognized for its gentle, safe, and effective approach to healing. Rather than suppressing symptoms, homeopathy works by stimulating the body’s innate self-healing mechanisms, addressing the root cause of imbalance.

In contrast to conventional medicine—which often views symptoms as something to eliminate—homeopathy sees symptoms as the body's attempt to detoxify and restore balance. By supporting these natural processes, homeopathy encourages a return to health, rather than just masking discomfort.

Our Approach to Homeopathy

Dr. Robert Abell and Lisa Abell use homeopathy as a cornerstone of their practice. They specialize in Drainage Homeopathy, a specific form of treatment rooted in the teachings of renowned French physician Dr. Gérard Guéniot. This method focuses on stimulating the body’s routes of elimination—enhancing detoxification through the liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, and more—to restore internal harmony.

Taught in Dr. Guéniot’s four Natural Medicine Schools in France and Toronto, Drainage Homeopathy uses low-potency remedies to gently address symptoms on the physical, emotional, and mental levels. It’s a deeply holistic approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of all aspects of health.

Why Homeopathy?

Homeopathy continues to grow in popularity in the United States, with an estimated 25–50% increase in use each year over the past decade. This success is driven by several key benefits:

  • Highly Effective
When the correct remedy is chosen, results can be rapid, complete, and long-lasting.

  • Exceptionally Safe
Homeopathic remedies are non-toxic and safe for babies, children, and pregnant women—with no risk of side effects.

  • Compatible with Conventional Medicine
Remedies can be used alongside prescription medications without risk of interaction.

  • Natural and Non-Addictive
Remedies are derived from natural substances and are non-habit-forming. Once symptoms improve, treatment is paused.

  • Immune-Supportive
Homeopathy works in harmony with the immune system, unlike conventional treatments that may suppress natural functions (e.g., cough suppressants inhibiting the body’s effort to clear the lungs).

  • Truly Holistic
Homeopathy treats the whole person—not just the symptoms—helping to uncover and address the underlying cause of imbalance.

 What Is Homeopathic Medicine?

Homeopathy is a natural system of medicine based on the principle of stimulating the body’s innate ability to heal itself. It is built on three core principles that guide its practice:

  • Like Cures Like
A substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person can, in a highly diluted form, be used to treat similar symptoms in someone who is unwell. For example, if a person’s cold symptoms resemble those caused by mercury poisoning, a homeopathic preparation of mercury may be used as the remedy.

  • The Minimum Dose
Remedies are administered in extremely diluted doses—often as little as one part substance to over a trillion parts water. This minimal dose is gentle on the body while still triggering a therapeutic response.

  • The Single Remedy
Rather than taking multiple medications for various symptoms, a single carefully selected homeopathic remedy is used to address the whole person—body, mind, and emotions.

These principles parallel those used in conventional medicine, such as allergy desensitization (where small doses of allergens are given to build tolerance) and vaccination (introducing a small, controlled amount of a virus to stimulate immune protection).

Homeopathic medicine is widely practiced around the world, particularly in Europe, Canada, and India, where it is respected as a powerful and effective form of natural healing. Its global use and long-standing history lend credibility to its effectiveness and value in modern integrative medicine.
