Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Understanding the Rise in Autism

Autism is a complex and increasingly common neurological disorder affecting children and young adults at an alarming rate. Just a few decades ago, it was so rare that many doctors had little to no experience with it—now, it has reached what many consider epidemic levels. Despite growing awareness, the root causes of autism remain widely misunderstood.

Dr. Robert and Dr. Lisa Abell have been treating children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) for nearly 30 years—not because they initially set out to specialize in it, but because families needed help. As more children became ill, parents came searching for answers, and the Abells responded with compassion, determination, and a commitment to uncovering and addressing the underlying causes.

Our Approach to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Over 28 years ago, Dr. Robert Abell began treating children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in California. These early cases proved to be some of the most challenging of his career—but also the most transformative. As his clinical experience deepened, so did the understanding of the complex and multifactorial causes of ASD. Remarkably, many children began to show significant improvement, and in some cases, complete remission.

One of the most important lessons we've learned in treating ASD is that no two children are the same. There is no universal protocol—each child requires a highly individualized approach, unique therapies, and time. While we cannot always predict outcomes, we’ve witnessed profound changes when the right interventions are applied at the right time.

Outcomes vary—some children experience full remission, while others make meaningful strides but may still face ongoing challenges. The reasons for these differences are not always clear. However, what consistently plays a crucial role in a child's progress is the commitment and involvement of their parents. Their dedication often makes a powerful difference in the success of treatment, though even that is not the only determining factor.

Our mission is to walk alongside families with compassion, persistence, and the belief that healing—whether partial or profound—is always worth striving for.

Core Factors We Commonly Address in Treatment

Through years of clinical experience, we’ve identified several key underlying factors that are essential to address when working toward healing and recovery—particularly in complex conditions like ASD and chronic illness. These include:

  • Environmental Toxicity
Exposure to chemicals, pollutants, and other environmental stressors that burden the body's detoxification systems.

  • Heavy Metal Toxicity
Accumulation of metals such as mercury, lead, and aluminum, which can interfere with neurological and immune function.

  • Vaccine Injury
Identifying and addressing adverse reactions that may occur in response to vaccines, with a focus on gentle detoxification and immune support.

  • Genetic Mutations in Metabolic Pathways
Variations in genes (such as MTHFR and others) that impair detoxification, methylation, and nutrient utilization.

  • Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies
Identifying and correcting critical nutrient gaps that can impair cognitive, immune, and metabolic function.

  • Food Intolerances
Hidden sensitivities that create inflammation and impact digestion, behavior, and overall wellness.

  • Microbiome Imbalance & Gut-Brain Connection
Damage to the gut lining and disruptions in microbiota that influence not only digestion but also mood, behavior, and neurological health.

Our Treatment Philosophy

Our approach to treating Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) centers on identifying and addressing the root causes unique to each child. By working to eliminate underlying stressors—whether environmental, biological, or neurological—we create a foundation for meaningful healing and progress.

We remind parents that this journey takes time. It is often non-linear, with ups and downs along the way. However, with persistence, care, and a personalized plan, children can make remarkable strides—and in many cases, reach levels of function that once seemed out of reach.

We are here to walk alongside you every step of the way.
